PU or Poly Urethane is a synthetic material like vinyl that is very common today in “leather like” furniture as it is softer than vinyl, but not as durable. A high quality vinyl will last longer, but won’t be as soft as polyurethane so you have to decide which is more important to you. Real leather is far more expensive so if your couch or armchair was a “reasonable” price it is likely polyurethane with a leather like surface treatment or is a bonded leather base with a PU surface, both are not as long lasting as vinyl or real leather. Real leather comes in many different finishes and qualities, pigmented leather is often used in automobiles and furniture that has a very consistent look to the surface or has vibrant colors.

Dyed leather is a higher quality and more expensive product but will develop a “patine” (wear lines) that makes it look like it’s worn but that’s part of it’s charm. Dyed leather stains easily and needs regular cleaning and conditioning, pigmented leather needs less care, but still needs to be cleaned and depending upon the surface finish may need conditioning. PU or vinyl only need to be cleaned and both will take more abuse than real leather in the short term but PU will fall apart faster than vinyl.

When PU or vinyl start to crack or delaminate they cannot be “fixed” only replaced. Real leather can be repaired by a service that bonds the cracks with a pigmented glue and then will spray paint the surface to blend the repair, this is a good short term fix but will not last as long in use as replacing the leather.

So what should you do with your damaged chair or couch? If it was an inexpensive purchase I may recommend replacing it as the quality of the frame and support materials may be worn out as well, cheap furniture is only designed to last a few year under hard use and possibly 5~10 with occasional use.
